Backbone Rock Recreation Area

📍 Regional

A Cherokee National Forest recreation area along Beaverdam Creek featuring the world's smallest national recreation tunnel — a 20-foot rock blasted through a narrow ridge fin in 1901 — alongside swimming holes, waterfalls, and excellent trout fishing. Hiking trails above the main tunnel area access panoramic ridge views toward Holston Mountain and Iron Mountain. The site's unique geological character and easy access from Shady Valley make it one of Johnson County's top natural attractions.
