Greeneville
Andrew Johnson's hometown - Civil War history, scenic trails, and small-town charm
Greeneville is a town of quiet dignity and deep American history, set in the rolling foothills of Greene County between the Blue Ridge and the Unakas. It is perhaps best known as the hometown of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, whose life and legacy are preserved across multiple National Park Service sites that together form the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site.
The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site encompasses the President's two homes, his tailor shop, and his tomb - all within walking distance of the historic downtown. Ranger-led tours and self-guided exhibits explore Johnson's improbable rise from illiterate tailor's apprentice to the presidency, and the turbulent era of Reconstruction he navigated after Lincoln's assassination.
Downtown Greeneville has preserved much of its 19th-century character, with locally-owned shops, galleries, and restaurants occupying historic storefronts along Depot and Main streets. The Dickson-Williams Mansion, the General Morgan Inn, and the First Presbyterian Church are among the architectural landmarks that anchor the historic district.
Greeneville is also a gateway to outstanding natural recreation. The Appalachian Trail passes nearby, Kinser Park offers recreational amenities along Nolichucky River tributaries, and the scenic drives through the surrounding countryside reveal some of the most pastoral landscapes in all of East Tennessee.
