Bristol

The Birthplace of Country Music, straddling two states along the iconic State Street

Bristol occupies a unique place in American musical history and American geography. The city famously straddles the Tennessee-Virginia state line, with State Street serving as the literal border - you can walk from one state to the other in a single block. This quirky civic identity has made Bristol one of the most distinctive small cities in the South.

In 1927, music producer Ralph Peer set up a recording studio on State Street and produced the Bristol Sessions - recordings by Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family that launched commercial country music. The Smithsonian Institution called it 'the big bang of country music,' and the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion festival each September celebrates that legacy with three days of roots music across multiple stages.

The Birthplace of Country Music Museum, opened in 2014, is a stunning interpretive experience that tells this story in full, with interactive exhibits, listening stations, and rotating collections of instruments and memorabilia. It's a world-class cultural institution in a surprisingly intimate setting.

Beyond music, Bristol offers a vibrant downtown with local restaurants, the historic Bristol Motor Speedway, and easy access to the Virginia Creeper Trail and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area just over the state line.
