Elizabethton

Gateway to Roan Mountain, Sycamore Shoals, and the breathtaking Overmountain country

Elizabethton is one of Northeast Tennessee's most historic and naturally beautiful communities, nestled in the Doe River valley with mountain ridges rising in every direction. The town's European settlement dates to the 1770s, making it one of the oldest communities west of the Appalachians, and its role in the American Revolution was decisive.

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park preserves the site where the Overmountain Men mustered in 1780 before marching to their pivotal victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain - a turning point in the Revolutionary War. The park's fort reconstruction and interpretive center bring this history vividly to life, and the annual Overmountain Victory Trail Commemoration re-enacts the march each October.

The Doe River Covered Bridge, built in 1882, is one of the oldest surviving covered bridges in Tennessee and a beloved landmark at the center of town. The adjacent Covered Bridge Park and the Tweetsie Trail trailhead make it a hub for outdoor recreation along the river.

Just 18 miles away, Roan Mountain State Park offers some of the most spectacular high-elevation scenery in the Southern Appalachians, including the famous Catawba rhododendron gardens that bloom brilliantly each June - drawing visitors from across the region.
