Jonesborough

Tennessee's oldest town and home of the National Storytelling Festival since 1973

Jonesborough holds the distinction of being Tennessee's oldest town, founded in 1779 before Tennessee was even a state - it was briefly the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin. Walking the brick-paved Main Street, flanked by Federal-style buildings dating to the early 1800s, feels like stepping directly into the 19th century.

The National Storytelling Festival, held every first full weekend of October, has put Jonesborough on the cultural map of America. Since 1973, some of the world's finest storytellers have gathered in this small town to share tales in large tents on the historic lawn - drawing audiences of over 10,000 visitors for a weekend of magic. The International Storytelling Center operates year-round, hosting performances and educational programs.

Beyond the festival, Jonesborough rewards slow exploration. The Chester Inn State Historic Site, the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center with its exceptional museum, and the Washington County Old Courthouse each hold layers of local and national history. Antique shops, artisan studios, and farm-to-table restaurants fill the storefronts along Main Street.

The town's location in the Nolichucky River valley puts it within easy reach of outstanding whitewater paddling on the Nolichucky River, plus hiking in Cherokee National Forest - making Jonesborough a perfect base for both cultural and outdoor adventures.
