Mountain City
Johnson County seat at the gateway to Watauga Lake, Doe Mountain, and the Snake 421
Mountain City is the county seat of Johnson County and the mountain-lake gateway at the northeastern edge of the Tri-Cities region. Sitting along US 421 — the famous "Snake" motorcycle route — the town anchors access to Watauga Lake, Doe Mountain Recreation Area, and some of the best hiking and paddling in Northeast Tennessee.
Downtown Mountain City preserves a walkable main street with the Johnson County Center for the Arts and the Musical Heritage Mural Mile celebrating the county's bluegrass and old-time roots. Ralph Stout Park and John Cunningham Park provide playgrounds, sports fields, disc golf, and paved trails for families and visitors.
Johnson County draws outdoor enthusiasts year-round: ATV and bike trails at Doe Mountain, boating on Watauga Lake, fly fishing on mountain creeks, and easy access to Damascus and the Virginia Creeper Trail just over the state line. Whether you're passing through on 421 or planning a lake weekend, Mountain City is the practical hub for Johnson County.
