Map shows Asheville, NC. Times vary from Kingsport and Bristol.
Asheville is the Tri-Cities' go-to "big city" escape without flying — walkable downtown, farm-to-table dining, and enough indie shops to fill a full Saturday.
You can do Biltmore as a half-day anchor or skip the estate entirely and focus on the River Arts District, Grove Arcade, and Battery Park bookstores.
Highlights
- Biltmore Estate — house tour, gardens, winery (reserve tickets ahead)
- River Arts District — studios and murals along the French Broad
- Downtown & Grove Arcade — local retail, chocolate, and live music
- Blue Ridge Parkway access — short drives south for overlooks
Sample one-day itinerary
Arrive early for Biltmore timed entry, or park in the River Arts District and walk studio row before lunch crowds.
Pack a reservation for popular spots on weekends. Pack Square and Wall Street area are easy on foot.
Browse local makers, grab coffee, stroll Pack Memorial Park. Optional: Botanical Gardens at UNC Asheville (seasonal).
Leave before 6pm to beat I-26 Sunday traffic, or stay for an early dinner and night drive back.
Know before you go
- Weekend parking downtown fills fast — use garages early or park slightly north and walk.
- Biltmore alone can consume 4–5 hours; don't pair it with a full downtown day unless you start at dawn.
- I-26 construction and events can add 20–30 minutes — check traffic before you go.
