Map shows Breaks Interstate Park, VA. Times vary from Kingsport and Bristol.
Breaks is one of the most underrated day trips from the Tri-Cities — the Russell Fork gorge drops hundreds of feet below rim trails and overlooks.
Most visitors do the overlook drive and a 1–2 mile rim walk; rafting on the Russell Fork is expert-level (spring releases), not a casual add-on.
Highlights
- Tower & Grandview overlooks
- Rim Trail — relatively gentle with big payoffs
- Kentucky/Virginia state park dual access
- Fall color along the gorge walls
Sample one-day itinerary
Enter from VA or KY side; stop at main overlooks before midday haze.
Park cafe seasonally open — pack lunch as backup.
Loop trails near overlooks; allow time for photos.
Know before you go
- Closer from Kingsport/Bristol than Johnson City — adjust drive time.
- Cliffs are unfenced in places — watch children and pets.
- Combine with Pikeville KY dinner if extending into evening.
