Map shows Cataloochee Valley, NC. Times vary from Kingsport and Bristol.

Cataloochee is the Smokies experience most visitors skip — elk herds, 1800s structures, and campground meadows without Gatlinburg traffic.

The access road is narrow gravel the last stretch — not for rushed drivers or large RVs on a first visit.

Highlights

  • Elk viewing at dawn and dusk in the valley meadows
  • Historic Palmer Chapel, schoolhouse, and homesteads
  • Cataloochee Creek — picnic spots
  • Boogerman Trail loop for a moderate forest hike

Sample one-day itinerary

Pre-dawn
Enter the valley

Leave Tri-Cities very early; elk most active at first light.

Morning
Elk & structures

Drive slowly; stay 50 yards from elk per NPS rules.

Midday
Picnic & exit

Pack food; leave before afternoon crowds on the gravel road.

Know before you go

  • Cove Creek Road is one-lane in places — go slow, use pull-offs.
  • No gas or food in the valley.
  • Different entrance than Townsend — do not confuse with Cades Cove.
