Map shows Damascus, VA. Times vary from Kingsport and Bristol.
Damascus is famous as Trail Days host town, but any weekend offers outfitters, coffee, and easy AT access. The real prize is Grayson Highlands State Park — wild ponies and open balds feel more like Wyoming than Tennessee.
This is a hiking-forward day trip; casual visitors should at minimum do Massie Gap to Wilburn Ridge out-and-back.
Highlights
- Grayson Highlands — wild ponies on Wilburn Ridge
- Damascus AT community — shops & hikers
- Mount Rogers — VA high point (longer hike)
- Rhododendron thickets in June
Sample one-day itinerary
Arrive early for parking. Wilburn Ridge loop ~4 miles with gentle elevation.
Wide views and ponies — keep 50ft distance, do not feed.
Ice cream and gear shops; short Creeper Trail section if legs allow.
Know before you go
- Weather changes fast on balds — pack rain shell and fleece.
- Grayson Highlands parking is $7–10 (state park fee).
- No Abingdon on this list, but it's a natural stopover en route — dinner there if extending.
