Map shows Franklin, NC. Times vary from Kingsport and Bristol.
Franklin brands itself the Gem Capital of the World — dozens of mines let you sift bucket dirt for rubies, sapphires, and garnets, which makes it a foolproof kid day even in light rain.
Downtown Franklin is a real mountain town, not a strip — combine one mine session with main-street lunch and optional Cullasaja Gorge waterfall drives.
Highlights
- Gem mining at Cowee Mountain, Mason's, or similar mines
- Scottish Tartans Museum & heritage
- Downtown Franklin shops & dining
- Cullasaja Gorge — Dry Falls, Bridal Veil (scenic drive)
Sample one-day itinerary
Arrive at opening; 2-hour bucket package is enough for most kids.
Walk Main Street; browse lapidary shops.
US-64 west toward Highlands if weather clear; mind one-lane sections.
Know before you go
- Bring change of clothes for kids after sluicing.
- Cullasaja pull-offs are tight — no RVs on gorge road.
- Farther than Bryson City — do not combine both in one day.
