Map shows Natural Tunnel State Park, VA. Times vary from Kingsport and Bristol.

Natural Tunnel is one of those Southwest Virginia sights that photographs never quite capture — an 850-foot cave opening with a creek running through it, reachable by stairs or seasonal chairlift.

The state park adds a swimming pool, campground, and interpretive programs; plan at least three hours on site.

Highlights

  • Natural Tunnel overlook & boardwalk descent
  • Chairlift to tunnel floor (seasonal)
  • Stock Creek Gorge Trail
  • Park swimming pool (summer)

Sample one-day itinerary

Morning
Overlook first

Start at visitor center; view tunnel from rim before descending.

Midday
Tunnel floor

Chairlift or stairs down; explore creek level 60–90 minutes.

Afternoon
Pool or homeward

Summer pool option; leave by 4pm for Bristol return.

Know before you go

  • Chairlift seasonal — verify before planning descent for mobility-limited visitors.
  • Stairs are steep — not ideal for toddlers without carriers.
  • VA State Parks parking fee; busy July weekends.
