This is not an out-of-market escape — Roan Mountain is part of the Tri-Cities outdoor identity. Tennessee's Roan Mountain State Park and the Carvers Gap section of the AT are where locals go when they want big-sky views without a half-day in the car.
The Catawba rhododendron gardens are famous nationally; Carvers Gap to Round Bald and Jane Bald is one of the finest short high-elevation hikes in the Southern Appalachians.
