Barter Theatre — Virginia's State Theatre, founded during the Great Depression when audiences traded produce for admission — is one of America's great regional theaters, staging a year-round season of Broadway musicals, classic dramas, world premieres, and children's productions in two historic performance spaces. The Barter's commitment to American theatrical heritage and new American plays makes it a nationally recognized institution. The main stage, a beautifully restored 1833 building, provides an intimate theatrical experience. A performance at Barter Theatre is the single most quintessential Abingdon cultural experience.
