Chad Wellmon asks a basic question that is important for everyone: why is disciplined study — education — so important to us? Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of higher education, he calls us 'to know and understand our dappled world' both in colleges and universities and beyond them. His work has important implications not only for university faculty and school teachers, but for all those who learn together — the book clubs, the Bible studies, the community education classes, and more.

Dr Wellmon is Commonwealth Professor of English and German, along with an appointment in History, at the University of Virginia. He has written extensively on modern European intellectual history, with a particular interest in the history of the modern research university.

In addition to books on the history of anthropology, the modern research university, the history of reading and print, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Max Weber, he has recently published After the University: Higher Education and the Future of Intellectual Work, which will form the basis of his King Institute lecture.
