The Hawkins County Courthouse stands as a monument to Tennessee's judicial heritage, occupying a site where courts have served since 1788 — making it the site of the longest continually serving county court in the state. The current 1836 Greek Revival structure is a masterwork of frontier-era civic architecture and one of the best-preserved antebellum courthouses in Tennessee. The surrounding courthouse square retains much of its 19th-century character. A National Register property commanding the heart of one of Appalachia's most historically significant small towns.
