The Holston Mountain Trail is a challenging 26-mile ridgeline route through the Cherokee National Forest in Johnson County, traversing the full length of Holston Mountain with stunning views into Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina from multiple bare rock outcrops. The trail is suitable for day hiking on shorter segments or multi-day backpacking along the full ridge. Wildlife viewing opportunities include black bear, wild turkey, and numerous hawk species migrating along the ridge in autumn. The lack of crowds makes this one of the most rewarding wilderness experiences accessible from the Tri-Cities area.
