Laurel Bloomery Heritage Area

Laurel Bloomery takes its unusual name from one of the earliest iron bloomery furnaces operated in the southern Appalachians, where local ore was smelted to produce wrought iron in the early 19th century. The surrounding community preserves its rural character and connection to the iron-working heritage vital to frontier economics. Historical markers explain the industrial significance of the site within the broader context of Appalachian iron production. The scenic highway 91 corridor through this area of Johnson County is among the most beautiful rural drives in Northeast Tennessee.
