The Virginia side of downtown Bristol along State Street preserves 19th- and early 20th-century commercial architecture across the famous painted-line state boundary from Tennessee. Specialty shops, music venues, and restaurants fill buildings that have housed commerce since the city was founded — a complement to the Tennessee side Birthplace of Country Music district. (Not Bristol Caverns — those are a separate underground attraction on Bristol Cavern Highway.)
