On the first and third Monday of each month at 6:00, the Bristol Listening Room will host the Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia. It's free to attend, and they'd love nothing more than for you to join. Tonight's gathering will feature music from Barbara Walton, Jonathan Short, and Jenny Gillenwater.

Led by local musician and teacher Mary Munsey, the Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia are a casual cohort of seriously talented songwriters who get together each month to listen to each other’s songs, brainstorm ideas, discuss chord progressions, and more than anything, encourage each other to keep writing. You may already be familiar with them from their other monthly gatherings on the second Saturdays at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum or the first Thursdays at the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center. According to Mary, these songwriters may represent any number of different genres ranging from traditional folk, bluegrass, country, and Americana to blues, jazz, R&B, pop, and beyond. The thing that unites them all is that their songs are authentically born from this region.

Attendees can expect a relaxed, family-friendly environment featuring a different group of songwriters each time. So, come downtown to the Bristol Listening Room (former L.C. King building) beginning at 6:00 on the first and third Monday of each month to experience Appalachian songwriting in its purest form.
