When Catawba rhododendrons blanket Roan Mountain's famous balds in brilliant pink and purple blooms, the Rhododendron Festival draws hikers, photographers, and nature lovers from across the eastern United States. The festival includes ranger-led hikes to the Rhododendron Gardens — the world's largest natural rhododendron garden — live Appalachian music, craft vendors, and environmental education booths. Peak bloom typically occurs mid-June and creates one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the eastern United States. Shuttle service to the summit is provided during festival weekend.
