♻️ Trash, Recycling & Special Disposal
Most of the region uses county convenience centers (not curbside everywhere). City residents may have municipal pickup — check your address. Recycling and special items vary by county.
Quick rules: • Latex paint: dry completely, then bag with household trash • Oil-based paint: many county transfer stations accept (do not need to be dried) • Medications: permanent drop boxes at pharmacies + sheriff offices; DEA Take Back Days twice yearly • Electronics/TVs: county transfer stations or TDEC e-waste collections • Cardboard: accepted at most convenience centers — flatten boxes • Motor oil/antifreeze: most county centers have collection drums • Household hazardous waste (HHW): TDEC mobile collection events — check tn.gov/environment/hhw
State-sponsored free drop-off for paint, cleaners, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, and other HHW — dates announced annually for Sullivan, Washington, Hawkins, Greene, and neighboring counties.
Typical accepted items: oil-based paint, stains, solvents, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, mercury thermometers, CFL bulbs. NOT accepted: latex paint (dry at home), explosives, medical waste, radioactive materials.
Permanent secure drop boxes at many pharmacies and law enforcement offices. DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day twice per year (spring & fall).

County transfer stations accept household garbage, cardboard, mixed paper, aluminum/tin, appliances, electronics, tires, mattresses, and more. Kingsport and Bristol city residents also have municipal services.

Kingsport residents: curbside recycling collection plus a new Recycling Convenience Center for drop-off. Sanitation handles trash pickup in city limits.
Curbside recycling: check kingsporttn.gov for pickup schedule and accepted materials (cardboard, plastics, cans). New Recycling Convenience Center opened 2025 — improved drop-off for residents. City sanitation: 423-229-9451.
Municipal trash and recycling services for Bristol TN residents. County transfer station on Raytheon Rd also serves Sullivan County.
Six county convenience centers for household trash and recycling. Separate brush sites and a waste tire recycling center. Johnson City has municipal solid waste pickup.

Nine convenience centers plus a dedicated recycling center. Residents allowed ½ pickup load per day. Most centers accept cardboard, plastics #1–2, metals, motor oil, appliances, and more.

Greene County operates convenience centers across the county accepting household trash, cardboard, plastics, glass, metals, electronics, tires (4/year), motor oil, and textiles at select sites.
Office Mon–Fri 6am–2:30pm. Center hours vary by location — see county site.

County convenience station for household trash and recyclables serving Erwin and Unicoi County.
Contact county solid waste office for current convenience station hours and accepted materials (cardboard, metals, plastics). TDEC HHW mobile collections periodically serve Unicoi County — check tn.gov/environment/hhw.
Tennessee rules differ by paint type. Never pour paint down drains or on the ground.
Latex/water-based: Remove lid, let dry completely (or mix with kitty litter), then dispose with household trash. Oil-based/stain: Take to county transfer station (Sullivan, Hawkins, Washington) or TDEC HHW event. Sullivan County accepts oil-based without drying. Donate usable paint to Habitat ReStore or community theater groups.
Old computers, TVs, and monitors are banned from landfills in TN. Drop at county transfer stations or special e-waste events.

Flatten cardboard boxes before drop-off. Most county convenience centers and city recycling programs accept corrugated cardboard and mixed paper.
Tips: • Remove packing materials and flatten boxes • Greasy pizza boxes usually go in trash • Shredded paper: check if your center wants it bagged City curbside: Kingsport and Johnson City residents — check municipal sanitation pages for bin rules.
